Abstract

This qualitative literature review, titled "The Transformation of the Thai drama Series Industry from Local to Global in the Era of Changing Media Landscapes and Consumer Behavior," aims to synthesize and analyze existing literature concerning the transformation of the Thai television series industry, alongside shifts in the media landscape and consumer behavior within the digital age. The study employed a systematic search strategy across Thai research databases, encompassing both documentary sources and online materials. Keywords utilized for the search included: media globalization, transnational media, streaming platforms, creative industries, Hallyu, Thai BL, soft power, and glocalization. Data analysis was conducted using Thematic Analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes within the selected literature.

The findings indicate that: 1) Key factors within the new media landscape facilitating the globalization of Thai series include the emergence of international platforms acting as both Distributors and Financiers. These platforms enable local content to transcend national borders and reach global audiences. Furthermore, regional platforms contribute by fostering content exchange among domestic viewers, leading to elevated production standards, international co-investment, and increased competition within the global market. 2) Content creators have adapted their processes, primarily employing Glocalization as a core strategy. This involves creating content that retains local distinctiveness while utilizing universal narrative language comprehensible to international viewers. 3) Consumer behavior and fandom culture play a crucial role in building communities that drive trends across diverse cultural spaces. Audience reception and engagement are influenced by factors such as perception and cultural proximity, leading to variations in how series are received in different countries.
