Community Involvement in Forest Conservation A Case Study of the Community Forest in Ban Noen Sombat Chorakhesamphan Sub-district, U Thong District, Suphan Buri Province

Abstract

            This article has the following objectives: (1) To study the operations and community participation in conserving the forest areas of the community at Nern Sam Bat village, and (2) To examine the problems and obstacles faced by the community in participating in the conservation of the forest areas at Nern Sam Bat village. From the study, it was found that the majority of the community members actively collaborate, both in presenting identified issues and suggesting solutions, as well as collectively deciding on the course of action for efficient operation. Continuous monitoring of the ongoing activities is maintained. Regarding problems and obstacles arising from conservation activities, it was identified that (1) the budget for management and administration is insufficient, (2) the lack of regular meetings due to individual workload responsibilities, (3) the absence of second and subsequent leadership generations, and (4) inadequate income from volunteer activities to support the working group. Recommendations include: (1) the government should create marketing channels and support the establishment of groups producing products from local natural resources and community tourism; (2) the government should support and disseminate conservation management guidelines; and (3) the government should engage in continuous public relations, advocacy, and management of forest conservation resources in the community.
