An Analytical of Appamāda Dhamma to Support the Practice of Brahmacariya of Monks in Buddhist
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research article encompasses three primary objectives: 1) to examine the principle of Appamāda (Heedfulness) in Buddhism; 2) to investigate the principles of Brahmacariya (the Holy Life) for monks; and 3) to analyze Appamāda as a supportive factor for the practice of Brahmacariya among Buddhist monks. This study is a qualitative inquiry employing a documentary research methodology. Primary data was synthesized from the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University edition of the Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka), Buddhist scriptures, academic texts, and relevant research literature. The data was subsequently processed using content analysis and Buddhist hermeneutics
The research findings indicate that:- Appamāda (Heedfulness) is defined as the principle of non-negligence, consisting of essential components such as Mindfulness (Sati), Clear Comprehension (Sampajañña), Effort (Viriya), and Wisdom (Paññā). This principle functions as a vital mechanism for governing and regulating body, speech, and mind in accordance with the Dhamma-Vinaya (Doctrine and Discipline), which serves as the fundamental basis for a monk's Brahmacariya (Holy Life). Meanwhile, the practice of Brahmacariya in Buddhism is a way of life aimed at purity and liberation, with Ethical Conduct (Sīla), Mental Discipline (Samādhi), and Wisdom (Paññā) as its core constituents. The synthetic analysis reveals that Appamāda (Heedfulness) plays a pivotal role in supporting a monk’s Brahmacariya (Holy Life) across four distinct dimensions:1) it serves as the foundation for the cultivation of mindfulness and wisdom; 2) it acts as a safeguard against defilements (Kilesa) that obstruct the holy life; 3) it functions as the primary catalyst for sustained effort (Viriya) in spiritual practice; and 4) it provides a guarantee for the stability and integrity of adhering to the Dhamma-Vinaya.Consequenty, Appamāda is regarded as the essential core that ensures the fulfillment of Brahmacariya, leading toward the ultimate goal of Buddhism: the Path, the Fruit, and Nibbāna.
