Buddhist Methods for Enhancing Motivation and Perseverance (Viriya) in Dissertation Writing among Doctoral Students in Buddhist Educational Administration

This academic article aims to propose guidelines for applying Buddhist methods to enhance motivation and perseverance (Viriya) among doctoral students in the Buddhist Educational Administration program, who frequently encounter challenges, high-pressure environments, and burnout during the dissertation-writing process. The study reveals that formulating a dissertation in this specific field is highly complex, as it requires integrating modern educational concepts with Buddhist text, often alongside the students' full-time professional responsibilities. To address these issues, this article presents an integrated Buddhist framework consisting of three core mechanisms: 1) cultivating intrinsic motivation through Chanda (intention) and Saddha (faith) to shift perspectives from mere graduation toward intellectual creation; 2) systematically driving perseverance through Iddhipada 4 (path to success) and Sammappadhana 4 (right exertions) to manage behaviors, reduce procrastination, and control distractions; and 3) managing emotions and confronting obstacles using Yonisomanasikara (analytical reflection) to transform constructive feedback into academic refinement. This approach not only enables students to complete their degrees successfully but also fosters the essential qualities of Buddhist educational administrators equipped with cognitive resilience and mental sustainability.
