The Social, Cultural, and Imaginary Territories of Kathoey Assemblage: A case of Berlin and Hamburg, Germany

Abstract
The objective of this research was to analyze the complex characteristics of the social, cultural and imaginary territories of the Kathoey assemblage in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany. By using individual Kathoey as the target group, 12 members of cabaret shows from the Tiffany Show, the Simon Cabaret, and the Alcazar Cabaret were interviewed.Then, thegrounded theory was applied. Data was collected by usingan unstructured interview form, participant observation form and memo form. Data was analyzed by content analysis to create a new concept in explaining social phenomena.
The results included 1) the immigration of Thai Kathoey to Germany started before 1989 under the concept of “searching for a better life” . The establishing of the Kathoey territory was complex and showed overlapping of 4 territories, physical, social, cultural, and imaginary; 2) apart from the physical habitats, the coffee Kathoey shop and public park became their social territory. Activities such as exchanging information, entertaining and socializing were commonly found; 3) the kitchen of Thai temple was their cultural territory. Their cooking potential was displayed while enhancing their opportunity in collecting merit was practiced. Lastly, an imaginary territory was established by Kathoey orators. By exchanging supernatural belief on local heroes, these Kathoey have connected themselves with local community and be able to fulfil their goal.
