Abstract

This research was conducted within the context of Thailand’s strategic emphasis on driving the creative economy through Soft Power, whereas community-level historical tourist attractions in the Mekong River Basin region still lack systematic studies that tangibly integrate archaeological evidence with community-based tourism frameworks. Therefore, this study aims to: 1) examine the conditions and characteristics of major archaeological sites in Tha Kho Subdistrict; 2) analyze the historical and archaeological tourism potential of the area; and 3) propose guidelines for sustainable historical tourism development integrated with community-based tourism. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the conceptual frameworks of Heritage Tourism and Community-Based Tourism (CBT) were utilized as analytical tools. A total of 30 key informants were selected through purposive and snowball sampling, comprising local sages, community leaders, academics, government officials, and tourism entrepreneurs. Data were collected via documentary research, field surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The compiled data were then analyzed using content analysis and SWOT analysis, with data trustworthiness verified through triangulation.
The findings revealed three significant themes. First, three sites with high tourism potential were identified: Wat Rang Si Chan, Wat Rang Na Pong, and Wat Taem Rang. Wat Rang Na Pong and Wat Taem Rang have been excavated and restored, while Wat Rang Si Chan awaits budget allocation. Second, significant artifacts including Trikaya amulets, Sukhothai ceramics, and Ming Dynasty Chinese ceramics indicate inter-regional trade networks. Third, SWOT analysis revealed area strengths in cultural heritage but limitations in budget, facilities, and local guide capacity.
The research proposes development guidelines based on six strategic dimensions, emphasizing Community Empowerment as the core of sustainable development, and integrating the role of Tha Kho Subdistrict Administrative Organization as the Lead Anchor connecting the Fine Arts Department, Provincial Cultural Office, private sector, academic institutions, and local communities. The findings contribute academically by extending the Heritage Tourism framework to Mekong River community contexts, and contribute practically by proposing operational collaborative mechanisms applicable for sustainable historical tourism development.
