Naming of mudmee (ikat) patterns of ethnic groups in sakon nakhon province: an ethnosemantic study
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the naming of mudmee (ikat) textile patterns among ethnic groups in Sakon Nakhon Province. Specifically, it seeks to analyze (1) the linguistic structures of pattern names and (2) their semantic components within the framework of ethnosemantics. The study employed a qualitative research approach, collecting data from five ethnic groups—Phu Thai, Yor, Yoy, Kaleung, and Tai–Lao—through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and fieldwork analysis. A total of 18 key informants participated in the study.
The findings showed that the naming of mudmee patterns involves both simple and expanded structural forms, incorporating direct and metaphorical meanings that vary across ethnic groups. The Phu Thai predominantly employed expanded structures conveying abstract meanings, whereas the Yor and Kaleung used concise simple structures with direct meanings. In contrast, the Yoy and Tai–Lao utilized both structural types, reflecting linguistic flexibility and the integration of traditional values with contemporary cultural influences. Many pattern names are closely associated with nature, the environment, beliefs, and ritual practices, while others demonstrate the influence of modern culture through the adoption of personal names or contemporary symbols. Overall, the naming of mudmee patterns functions not merely as a means of identification but also as a reflection of worldviews, cognitive systems, identities, and cultural transformations within local communities in Sakon Nakhon Province. The study underscores the crucial role of language in transmitting indigenous knowledge and sustaining cultural values across generations.
