Abstract

This study employed survey research to examine the current situations of cannabis use, cannabis information-seeking behaviors, and risk behaviors related to cannabis use among adolescents in Nakhon Phanom. The sample consisted of 579 lower secondary school students from two schools under the Nakhon Phanom Secondary Educational Service Area Office in academic year of 2024. The participants were selected using multistage sampling. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a media use and information-seeking behavior questionnaire, and a risk behavior assessment related to cannabis use among adolescent students. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
The results revealed that 11 students (1.90%) had used cannabis in the past year. A total of 148 students (25.56%) had searched for information about the dangers of cannabis use. Among them, 316 students (54.58%) reported that they searched for such information in order to obtain new knowledge and information. The most frequently used source of information was online media, reported by 195 students (33.68%). The most frequently used platform was TikTok, reported by 81 students (27.46%). Most students were found to have a low risk of cannabis use (305 students; 52.68%), followed by very low risk (197 students; 34.02%), moderate risk (72 students; 12.44%), and high risk (5 students; 0.86%). The findings can serve as baseline information for developing preventive strategies for cannabis use among adolescents, particularly by considering the influence of online media and media literacy, which play a crucial role in adolescents’ decision-making.
