Satire strategies in the "Basement Karaoke page (Karaoke Chan Tai Din)”

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study satire strategies in the “Basement Karaoke page (Karaoke Chan Tai Din)” using a specific random sampling method for posts with a number of likes of 10,000 and above. The data was analyzed for satirical language strategies derived from song lyrics, considering the text headlines and images in the posts to support the analysis, and calculating the percentage of each strategy from the number of posts found. This analysis adapted the framework from the research of Umaphorn Sangkaman on “Linguistic strategies in satirical invention to create humor and sarcasm in Thai” The results of the research indicated that the 5 satire strategies were found in sequence as follows: 1) The use of parody words (50 posts, 41.67%), 2) The use of satirical words (40 posts, representing 33.33%), 3) The use of rhetorical questions (20 posts, representing 16.67%) 4) The use of sarcastic words (13 posts, representing 10.83%) and 5) The use of metaphorical wording (6 posts, representing to 5.00%) The data from all 120 posts were satirical towards the actions of politicians, national leaders, and the government. These satire strategies led to implied meanings, utilizing indirect speech acts that the recipient must interpret.
