The study of welfare to elderly prisoners in Nakhon Pathom Central Prison

Abstract

The Study of welfare to elderly prisoners in Nakhon Pathom Central Prison aims at 1) Studying the information about the welfare of elderly prisoners, 2) Studying the information about the problem and barrier of welfare to elderly prisoners, and 3) Suggestion to improve the way of the quality welfare management to elderly prisoners in Nakhon Pathom Central Prison. This research is qualitative research by analyzing data from 9 informants; head officer and correctional officer: 3 person, elderly male and female prisoners 60 years old up: 6 person. Then specific category were the elderly prisoners for a long time to imprison and highest ages too and then available kinds of these from the officer. Start to research since November 2018 - April 2019. The results was found that Nakhon Pathom Central Prison provided welfare services appropriate within the Prisoner Protection Concepts by the Human Rights Guidelines and United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, 1957. Basic care is appropriate for elderly prisoners, the corrections officers were understanding about the behavior and needs of the elderly prisoners. The program offers a variety of activities suitable to the elderly must include training, spiritual development, vocational training and exercises. The problems are due to bedding congestion areas are limited to elderly prisoners and can’t exclude other types of inmates. The medicines are generic home but not a specific drug. Elderly prisoners, many of whom don’t wanted to attend the event due to the age and physical limitations. Feedback from the research senior management should have a policy that emphasizes the importance to the welfare of the elderly prisoners in prisons designed for a specific model for elderly prisoners. The training approach to creating value for themselves during and after the sentence and should the promotion of social enterprises to have access to activities in prisons.
