Needs and Behaviors in using Health Sciences Library of Undergrauate Students, Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the needs and service usage behaviors of undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, regarding the Health Sciences Library. The sample consisted of 316 students drawn from a population of 1,437, including those enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program (Six-year curriculum) and the Bachelor of Science program (Four-year curriculum). Data were collected through an online questionnaire validated for content accuracy (IOC) and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.97) during March–April 2025. Descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were medical students (66.77%), primarily first-year students (24.05%). The main purpose for using the library was to search for books and textbooks (87.34%). Most students visited the library 1–2 times per week (32.91%), mainly during the hours of 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM (54.43%), spending an average of 1–2 hours per visit (41.46%). Google was the primary tool for searching books and information (64.24%). Most respondents had used individual and group seating areas in quiet zones (93.67%). Overall, students expressed a high level of need in all aspects, with the highest mean score for facilities and physical environment ( = 4.44), followed by information resources (
= 4.08), library staff (
= 4.06), library services (
= 3.95), and communication and publicity (
= 3.81), respectively. Additional suggestions included increasing the number of sofas in the relaxation zones, providing 24-hour service, extending weekend operating hours, and adding more group study rooms. The results of this study can serve as a basis for planning improvements in information resource services, extending operating hours, and designing learning spaces in the Health Sciences Library to better align with the needs and behaviors of 21st-century students.
