Development of Generative AI Services to Enhance Learning and Research
Main Article Content
Abstract
The development of generative AI services at Thammasat University Library aims to support and research activities of students, faculty, researchers, and staff. Implementation was divided into two phases: Phase 1 involved a trial service where the library subscribed to five ChatGPT accounts accessible via library computers across branch locations, along with staff training programs to develop knowledge and understanding of generative AI service provision. In Phase 2, the library conducted an online survey to assess additional generative AI tool requirements, receiving 533 responses. Survey analysis led to service expansion through additional subscriptions to Gemini Advanced, Claude AI Professional, and Grammarly Pro to provide more comprehensive services aligned with user needs.
Results between April and November 2024 showed 720 users accessed the services, with undergraduate students comprising the primary user group (77.22%). The main purposes for service use were research support (67.16%) and teaching and learning (32.84%). User satisfaction with generative AI services was high (86.90%), demonstrating the changing role of academic libraries in the era of generative AI. The study identified several limitations requiring consideration, including requests for off-campus access to generative AI tools, the adequacy of available AI tools, and insufficient computer workstations to fully accommodate increasing demand—all critical issues for future service development and research.
