Management and Participation of Older Adults in Elderly Schools in Ban Na San District, Surat Thani Provinc

Abstract

          This research article aimed to: (1) examine the management of elderly schools; and (2) investigate the participation of older adults in the management of elderly schools in Ban Na San District, Surat Thani Province. A qualitative research approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 key informants and focus group discussions with 20 participants. Data triangulation was used to enhance the credibility of the findings. The findings revealed that: (1) the management of elderly schools in Ban Na San District, Surat Thani Province, was systematically organized, covering planning, goal setting, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The management focused on improving the quality of life of older adults in all dimensions, including physical, mental, social, and lifelong learning aspects. Older adults were classified according to their physical conditions to design appropriate activities for each group; and (2) the operation of elderly schools was supported by the Local Health Security Fund, government agencies, and educational institutions. Collaboration was integrated across all sectors in planning, activity implementation, and curriculum development. Moreover, older adults were encouraged to participate in all stages of the process, including activity design and administrative management, to ensure that the programs met their actual needs. As a result, the quality of life of older adults improved in all dimensions, including physical health, mental well-being, social participation, and lifelong learning. Participation therefore served as a key mechanism for driving the implementation of activities. In addition, continuous needs assessments and curriculum improvements contributed to the effective operation of elderly schools in Ban Na San District. These schools have become an important mechanism for promoting lifelong learning and enhancing the overall quality of life of older adults in a holistic manner.
