AN APPLICATION OF THE 5 PRECEPTS TO PROMOTE MORALITY AND ETHICS AMONG HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PIYASUKSA SCHOOL (WAT DON KHWANG SECONDARY SCHOOL) MUEANG DISTRICT, NAKHON RATCHASIMA PROVINCE

Abstract

This research objectives are: (1) to study the Five Precepts in Theravāda Buddhism (2) to investigate the current conditions of moral-ethics promotion among upper-secondary students at Piyasuksa School and (3) to apply the Five Precepts to enhance students’ moral and ethical conduct. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing documentary research and field study. Findings indicate that:

1) the Five Precepts constitute a foundational guideline for conduct oriented toward non-harm to oneself and others. They lay the groundwork for moral character and provide principles for peaceful co-existence. Regarding the school’s promotion of morality and ethics, a range of activities has been organized, such as daily chanting, Dhamma talks, exhibitions, and the cultivation of an ethical atmosphere (e.g., “moral corners,” inspirational quotations), alongside clearly defined disciplinary measures. These initiatives have contributed to students becoming more responsible, honest, considerate, and respectful of social rules.

2)  students are able to put the Five Precepts into practice in concrete ways in daily life: refraining from harming others, not stealing, using polite speech that does not incite conflict, and exercising caution in the use of online media—especially with regard to honesty and responsibility. Overall, the results suggest that integrating the Five Precepts into teaching-learning activities and the broader learning environment plays a significant role in sustainably cultivating students’ moral and ethical values. This integration serves as a primary pathway for developing behavior and civic consciousness grounded in virtue.
