Abstract

Halal logistics is a supply chain management concept that aims to ensure goods and services comply with Islamic law (Sharia) throughout the entire process—from sourcing raw materials, production, transportation, and storage to distribution. In the 21st century, the growth of the global Muslim population and the halal industry has made halal logistics a strategic component of business and industry. This scholarly article aims to (1) Explain the concept and development of halal logistics, (2) Analyze the principles and theoretical frameworks involved, (3) Examine applications in business and industry contexts, and (4) Present challenges and future trends based on an analytical literature review using data from 2005–2025. The study finds that halal logistics is not merely a religious instrument but an economic mechanism that builds consumer trust, enhances competitive capability, and supports sustainable development of organizations within the global economy. Key challenges identified are: (1) the diversity and inconsistency of halal standards among certification bodies, which hinders mutual recognition and international trade; (2) high investment and operating costs, especially for SMEs; (3) gaps in knowledge and skills among businesses and personnel; (4) inadequate workforce capacity and training; and (5) technological barriers such as costs, data privacy, and integration standards. These five dimensions are critical to address in order to advance halal logistics into a systematic and sustainable global practice.
